A shocking number of Indian woman say they were abused by their husbands or his relatives
After the gang rape and murder of an Indian woman in Delhi in 2012, legal reforms encouraged women to report sexual crimes committed against them. The result has been a increase in the number of reports and a more complete picture of violence against women in India.
The largest category of complaints are what the Indian legal system defines as “cruelty by husband or his relatives,” and it is difficult to know what exact shape that cruelty takes. Still, the chart above by Rishabh Srivastava makes clear that much of the violence against Indian women is perpetrated by members of their family.
Some have argued that Indian women take advantage of the country’s laws on sexual violence for personal gain or to seek revenge on their husbands. Click below for Srivastava’s analysis of that claim.
